Reading instructions might not be fun, but it’s essential for the best results with your kit. Here’s a condensed version of the key points:

1. Prepare Your Materials

• Check colours first: Compare your yarn sample card with the design chart to avoid mistakes.

• Understand the chart: Each square on the design chart represents one knot in a specific colour.

• Protect your canvas: Use masking tape on the edges to prevent fraying or snagging.

• Leave a margin: Keep at least four unworked rows around the edges of the canvas.

2. Set Up Your Workspace

• Start correctly: Begin in the lower left corner (or lower right if you're left-handed).

• Prevent slipping: If working on a table, weigh down the canvas with something heavy.

• Positioning tip: Beginners should work on a table, moving the canvas down row by row.

3. Begin Knotting

• Knot placement: Always knot over parallel threads—never twisted ones.

• Work methodically: Move row by row from left to right (or right to left if left-handed).

• Don’t flip the canvas: Keep all knots lying in the same direction for a neat finish.

4. Follow the Pattern

• For beginners: Work one row at a time to stay organized.

• Once confident: You can start working in blocks for efficiency.

• Use tools: A magnetic chart holder can help you track your place on the pattern.

5. Get Comfortable

• Once you’re confident, feel free to move to a comfy spot like the sofa and even watch TV while you work!

If you’re not turning under and working through both canvas layers, trim the unworked edges to about 1.5 inches. Fold them firmly to the back of the rug and baste in place, taking care not to pull the thread right though to the front. For a durable and polished finish, use rug binding, which is sewn around the edges and stitched to cover the turned canvas. The binding is mitered at the corners to ensure the rug lays flat.

At the end of every latch hook project there is always lots of fluff from the yarn all over the surface of your project. You can use rubber gloves or a rubber upholstery brush for the friction and just brush over the surface in different directions to collect all the fluff and then dispose of it.

That’s the essentials—now you’re set for a neat and lasting result!

For optimal care of rugs made with my kits and supplies, follow these recommendations:

• Routine Freshening: Simply shake out your rug and allow it to air in the sunshine.

• Cleaning Options: Hand washing is possible but may be challenging due to the rug’s size. A domestic carpet cleaning machine can be a suitable alternative.

• Machine Washing: This should only be done occasionally and only if your machine has either a delicate, gentle or hand wash cycle that you trust completely. Otherwise, do not machine wash.

• Protection & Durability: Applying Scotchgard is highly recommended—it’s an easy and inexpensive way to protect the fibers.

• Securing Knots & Preventing Slipping: Spraying the back of the rug with a rubber fixative helps keep the knots secure while preventing movement on tiled or laminate flooring.

These methods ensure longevity, cleanliness, and stability for your finished rug.

Super Grip clear spray creates a synthetic rubber coating that is perfect for use on the back of Latch Hook Rugs when completed and bonds to most types of fabrics. Not only does it stop your rug from slipping on your tiled/laminate floors it also helps secure the yarn knots on the back of your latch hook rug helping to prevent them from coming loose. It is also washable, so if you trust your washing machine or wash by hand your latch hook rugs, it is great. (I have no affiliation with the company that owns Super Grip and do not receive any thing for using their product). Click here to play a video on how to do this.

Latch Hook Rug canvas varies by Holes Per Inch (HPI)—common sizes include 3.3hpi, 3.75hpi (mainly in the US), 5hpi and 4hpi. The choice depends on your yarn’s thickness and the desired density of your project. To determine HPI, place a ruler along a row of holes and count how many fit in one inch.

I provide 3.3hpi Grid Marked Interlocked canvas by Zweigart, ideal for the Super Latch Rug Yarn in my kits. The blue grid markings help track progress. The canvas also features horizontal and vertical threads. Knots should always be made over parallel threads, as they are stronger. The twisted threads lock them in place, giving Interlocked canvas its name.

We ship all UK orders via Royal Mail. For parcels valued over £20, a signature is required upon delivery. If you won’t be available, please arrange for alternative delivery options, such as a designated neighbour or a safe place. You will receive an email from Royal Mail with your tracking number and instructions for managing your delivery preferences. It is your responsibility to make arrangements for the receipt of your parcel.

Orders are typically prepared for shipping within 3–10 working days (this may extend during busy periods). All kits are packed to order, and cushion covers and Christmas stockings are stitched by hand, requiring additional time. Once dispatched, delivery generally takes 2–3 days.

It is a wondrous activity to do - I am really enjoying it - well worth the money, the thoughtfulness to put info about self and little sweeties into packaging added a personal touch. Half way through doing this rug even though i have had it a while.It is quite big and a challenge but the design is easy to follow.I have bought a large fold up picnic style table that i work on and i have my wool all arranged in craft boxes with separate compartments to make it easier.It stays ready to work in the corner of my lounge and feels like my own rug making factory.I hope to finish it my xmas so i can get another one.It is a very relaxing hobbie to have with nice results at the end. Tried other companies but Clare's is the best for quality.

Just received my "slice of orange" kit. Thanks for prompt delivery. Really looking forward to attempting it. Just discovered latch hooking and this is the first design I feel I could live with. I only have so many granddaughters I can provide cute cushions for!
